Wood Bat Tournament benefits Baseball in Benin

With most summer baseball leagues done for the season, this week's Wood Bat Little League tournament in Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park is a good chance for teams to get one last round of games in. It also gives the players a chance to find out what it's like to hit using wood bats and is even helping to bring the game of baseball to Africa. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Baseball in Benin project. Benin is a small country in west Africa, where baseball was almost unknown until Gary Tonsager and Wally Langfellow, who'd been involved with Robbinsdale Little League, made it their mission to bring the game to Benin. Last year, a team of young players from Benin came to Minnesota to play in the Wood Bat tournament. Baseball equipment has been donated to players in Benin, along with instruction from coaches in Minnesota. There is also hope of getting a baseball field built in Benin. The Wood Bat tournament runs Thursday through Sunday at Lakeview Terrace, Lee, and Sanborn Parks in Robbinsdale and at Northside Park in St. Louis Park.
