Baseball in Benin tournament a big hit again
The crack of the bat was heard at the 13th annual Wood Bat Little League tournament in Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park. Plymouth-New Hope's 11-year-old all-stars knocked off some older teams on the way to the championship game of the 11-12 year old tournament Sunday afternoon. PNH scored the first three runs of the game in the championship, but they couldn't hold off the attack of the Coon Rapids-Andover Black team. CRA scored five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth on the way to a 10-4 win. Robbinsdale beat Golden Valley in the 10-year-old final. St. Louis Park won the 9-year-old division. The tournament was also a fundraiser for the Baseball in Benin project. About $10,000 was raised to aid in the effort to bring baseball to the small West African nation, and baseball equipment that was donated by participating teams will be shipped to Benin. Wood Bat Tournament benefits Baseball in Benin
With most summer baseball leagues done for the season, this week's Wood Bat Little League tournament in Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park is a good chance for teams to get one last round of games in. It also gives the players a chance to find out what it's like to hit using wood bats and is even helping to bring the game of baseball to Africa. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Baseball in Benin project. Benin is a small country in west Africa, where baseball was almost unknown until Gary Tonsager and Wally Langfellow, who'd been involved with Robbinsdale Little League, made it their mission to bring the game to Benin. Last year, a team of young players from Benin came to Minnesota to play in the Wood Bat tournament. Baseball equipment has been donated to players in Benin, along with instruction from coaches in Minnesota. There is also hope of getting a baseball field built in Benin. The Wood Bat tournament runs Thursday through Sunday at Lakeview Terrace, Lee, and Sanborn Parks in Robbinsdale and at Northside Park in St. Louis Park. Robbinsdale coaches help bring baseball to Africa
It started with Robbinsdale resident and baseball coach Gary Tonsager visiting Benin in west Africa as part of a program to donate eyeglasses and provide eye exams to children. Tonsager's conversations with interpreters in the French-speaking country while on the trip led to a discussion about starting a baseball program for kids in Benin. Baseball in Benin was born. Tonsager and Wally Langfellow helped get the ball rolling with equipment donations and guidance for coaches in Benin. Fernando Atannon came over from Benin, a country of about eight million, to work with Langfellow and Tonsager to learn the fundamentals of baseball and how to coach the sport. Atannon worked with three different local baseball teams and attended a camp at the University of Minnesota. Soccer is king in Benin, and they play some basketball, too. But baseball is brand new to the kids and the coaches. Atannon is headed back home now to share the knowledge he gained working with his new American friends and mentors. http://www.ccxmedia.org/ http://www.facebook.com/12localsports http://twitter.com/ccxsports 12 Sports is on Comcast cable channel 12 in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis and includes the cities Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Crystal, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, New Hope, Osseo, Plymouth and Robbinsdale.
